The Global Market for Offshore Wind Energy Status Quo and Market Potentials until 2030

The growing offshore wind energy (OWE) market is in a new phase of development. Firstly, installed capacity increased by over 10 % (1.7 GW) only in the first half of 2017 to over 16 GW installed (worldwide). Secondly recent tenders have resulted in low prices, down to zero bids. The auction for German offshore wind farms which ended in spring 2017 resulted in 0.0 ct/kWh for 3 parks with 1,380 MW – out of 4 parks being tendered. Offshore wind parks not needing any subsidies (only grid connection) any more are expected to speed up the international market in an impressive and enormous manner. Many countries will now be able to realise a bigger share of renewable energy in their energy mix. wind:research participates at Offshore Operation & Maintenance Forum on 12 to 14 September in London

As a matter of principle, offshore wind turbines are located in areas with severe weather conditions and long distances to the coast (at least in the case of Germany) which is why they are often difficult to access. Innovative O&M concepts play an important role in order to avoid or at least to minimise the duration of costly breakdowns. Actually, the UK is the only experienced country in the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms whereas Germany is just about to gain them.

The speeches and discussions at the offshore O&M forum relate to the main topics "accessibility and reliability of the turbines", "maintenance concepts", and "costs".

With respect to these subjects, the study "The Market for Operation & Maintenance in the Offshore Wind Energy until 2030" (available in German, title translated for informational purposes) was written by wind:research in April 2011. It serves also as the basis for the talk "What vessel and access solutions are out there and which are designed and planned" which will be given at the forum on 12 September 2011.

Poster session at the AWEA Wind Offshore 2011 in Baltimore

At once two topic proposals on the part of wind:research were chosen by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) for a poster session on the international conference "Wind Offshore 2011", taking place in Baltimore on 11 to 13 October 2011:

"Transport, logistics, and ports for the offshore wind energy in Europe until 2030"
"Special vessels for the offshore wind energy"

wind:research members will participate at the conference.

wind:research in German business newspaper "Handelsblatt"

On 13 July 2011, the German business newspaper "Handelsblatt" published an extensive article with the title "Competition for special vessels in the wind industry" (title translated from German). Next to managers and spokesmen from two big German energy utilities (E.ON and RWE), wind:research was asked by the Handelsblatt to rate the current vessel and port capacities and it also calculated the logistics potential of offshore wind farms.

wind:research drew the conclusion that the potential for vessel design, chartering, and logistics and erection of ports will amount to more than 80 billion euros by 2030. With the current vessel and port capacities, at maximum 180 turbines can be erected per year. But: if one wants to reach the German government's objective of an installed capacity amounting to 25 GW in 2030, a total number of 4,500 turbines has to be installed. However, the available installation units will not be able to realise a thousand of the required 4,5000 turbine installations.

Due diligence projects

By order of a service provider working on the international level, wind:research is currently investigating wind energy planning and projects in different European and non-European countries. This Commercial Due Diligence supports the client in developing his value creation.

In another due diligence project, the status quo as well as the development in the wind energy market in Germany and in other selected European countries is illustrated, serving as a basis for the evaluation of project pipelines. From this analysis, the market potentials are derived and possible ways for further proceeding are presented to the client.

wind:research conducts survey at the WAB conference "Windstärke 11 - Kurs Offshore"

From 7 to 9 June 2011, the conference "Windstärke 11 - Kurs Offshore" took place in Bremerhaven, Germany. Just as in the year before, wind:research acted as the conference's partner for market research and was hired to ask the approx. 800 conference participants 13 questions on current topics from the offshore section on the first two days of the conference. On the second and third day, employees of wind:research managed the interaction between the audience and the speakers in the three conference halls. Members of wind:research even gave a lecture on "Logistic challenges and needs for the erection of offshore wind farms in Europe" and conducted the session "Offshore wind turbines - market entry of new manufacturers".

AWEA Windpower 2011

With more than 10,000 participants, the "Windpower 2011", one of the world's biggest fair and congress events for wind energy, organised by the AWEA, took place from 22 to 25 May 2011 in Anaheim, California. It supplied the participants with information on the newest technology and sector developments. wind:research attended the event and created an overview of the existing offshore wind turbines according to manufacturers, providing information on when which manufacturer plans to develop a prototype, to produce it, and to go into series production (differentiated by turbine sizes ranging from 1.5 to 10 MW). Even Chinese, Korean, and Japanese manufacturers are taken into account.
